THE FILM

Black Motherhood through the Lens is about four Black women's experiences navigating the reproductive and maternal healthcare system from conception to postpartum. The women in this series have experienced miscarriage, lack of access to infertility care, fears about childbirth, and postpartum depression. It features the stories of Shaylene, Shannon, Ijeoma, and Jai-Me, who despite these challenges, boldly pursued their dreams of Black motherhood.

THE FACTS

Black women face a multitude of disparities from conception to postpartum. These disparities are not due to biological differences but they are attributed to systemic bias and inequalities. According to the NIH, maternal mortality has increased during the first year of the pandemic and Black women made up 30% of maternal deaths.

Black women are 2x more likely to experience infertility and postpartum mood disorders and statistically less likely to receive care for these conditions.
